Hikkaduwa is the place for underwater delights. The offshore wildlife of Sri Lanka is no less exotic than the denizens of its jungles. A visit to the Coral Sanctuary of Hikkaduwa provides a complete change of pace. The first marine sanctuary, it was created just in time to preserve the rapidly disappearing reef of Hikkaduwa. Many coral reef organisms can be seen when snorkeling around the shallow bay. Hire a glass bottomed boat, or goggles and flippers, and explore the fantasies under your feet.

For a different experience, the proposed reef sanctuary at Unawatuna, near Galle, is well worth seeing. This reef contains a higher number of fish species than the Great Barrier Reef and can be seen with ease.
